Didier Drogba’s goal in the 47 minute in the Chelsea 1-0 Barcelona game was enough to settle the nervy and thrilling game at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had to ride their luck many times, especially in the dying minutes as Barcelona players poured forward in search of the equalizer.
Even before Drogba’s goal from Chelsea’s counter-attack, Barcelona had dominated much of the game and they completely surrounded Chelsea’s defense.
But Pep Guardiola must be frustrated by the heroic displays by Petr Cech who at least blocked 3 clear chances by Messi and co.
Gary Cahill also shows why he should feature for England in Euro 2012 after a great display here and made sure he marked Messi everywhere the little Argentina magician go.
Xavi, Dani Alves, Messi, Sanchez all took turn bombarding Chelsea’s defense from all angles, and their one-two passes created problems for Chelsea, but Ramires was also on his peak tonight and his discipline in the middle of midfield helped breaking their play at times.
At one point, Ashley Cole had to clear a goal-bound ball and that alone could have taken a Chelsea fan’s life if he had a weak heart.
In the second half, Chelsea stood firm and cleared all the dangers and Barcelona with its all star players couldn’t break the stubborn defense organized by Cech.
Too bad Fernado Torres did not play any part in this game as he had pretty good record against Barcelona back then when he was playing for Atletico Madrid.
Roberto di Matteo truly has done a remarkable job since he took over from Andre Villas-Boas, and if this still doesn’t convince Roman Abramovich to appoint him the full time job as the Manager there, I’ll be completely out of words of this Russian tyrant now.
