The Rossoneri have been having a more successful season than many had anticipated so far. This includes seeing off Juventus in the league earlier this term and beating them again in the Supercoppa Italiana in December to pick up their first piece of silverware since 2011. Vincenzo Montella’s side currently find themselves in a good position to also secure European football for the first time since the 2013/2014 term, as they presently sit in fifth spot, but with things pretty tight in the table, they are definitely aiming higher than the Europa League for the 2017/2018 season.
Milan come into this game having secured a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Torino. It marked the second time in just a few days that they had to face the Granata, and for Montella’s troops, marked the second time they had to come from behind. In the Coppa Italia, they went 1-0 down, but scored two goals to win 2-1. In Serie A, they went 2-0 down, but scored twice to earn a draw.
That surely will give them the confidence they need to face Napoli. The Partenopei are a side that have troubled Milan in the past. In fact, the Rossoneri have not beaten them across all competitions since December 2014. And earlier this season, they lost 4-2 at the Stadio San Paolo. Last time they met at the Stadio San Siro, they were humiliated 4-0.
However, a lot has changed. Milan are unbeaten in eight straight games at the San Siro, which includes six wins. That also includes victories against Juventus and Lazio and Napoli have won just three out of their last 11 against the top six sides in the league. In addition, although Napoli have won eight out of a possible 11 at home, they have not been as strong in their travels, where they have won four out of a possible nine.
Still, with that in mind, they are undefeated in their past five, and recently welcomed Arkadiusz Milik back from injury. Whilst he was absent, Dries Mertens went on a scoring rampage, showing that goals indeed for the Partenopei could come from everywhere – and so it’s not by chance that Napoli have among the highest-scoring attacks in the league right now.
